Mark Clarke, M.D.
Joined PACI in 1996 (at inception)
Board Certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
Special area of expertise:
- Surgical pathology
- Microbiology
- Medical informatics
Dr. Clarke grew up in South Carolina. He graduated from the University of the South (Sewanee) and earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.
While at Sewanee, Dr. Clarke was a chemistry major who developed additional special interest in computer science and radioisotopes. As a senior project, Dr. Clarke interfaced a Perkin-Elmer analog gamma-ray spectrometer to an IMSAI 8080A microcomputer, (utilizing transistor-transistor logic) and Hewlett Packard 2000 minicomputer, thus converting a single channel analyzer to a multi-channel scaler, and automating the data collection and graphic data representation processes.
After medical school, Dr. Clarke developed an interest in renal disease and spent two years in the Immunopathology department at MUSC where he researched changes in the electrostatic charge barrier of the glomerular basement membrane in various renal disease models. He completed his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency and fellowship training at MUSC; developing expertise in surgical pathology. As a senior clinical pathology resident, Dr. Clarke received an Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists (ACLPS) Young Investigator Award for presentation of “Amniotic fluid urea nitrogen as a predictor of fetal lung maturity.”
He is the director of anatomic pathology and microbiology at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Dr. Clarke is also on staff at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. He wrote and developed the first website for PACI in 2004.
